Lake Township Schools

When Lake Township was formed out Lehman Township in 1842, Harvey's Lake developed its own school system. Classes were first held in homes until the first school was built in 1844. The picture at left is of the interior of the Ruggles school.

The Pennsylvania School System

Originally Pennsylvania public schools were supported by "subscriptions" from parents. Poor families often did not have access to these schools, despite attempts as early as 1790 to make education universal. The passage of the Free School Act in 1834 finally led to universal access to public schools.
