Sandy Beach & Sandy Bottom

West Corner's Playground

Sandy Beach was developed in 1925 as a rival to the attractions at north shore's Picnic Grounds and Sunset.

Promoted as "Wyoming Valley's Seashore-at-Home," the beach was a popular swimming spot until the 1960s. Sandy Beach also had a popular drive-in, dance hall and small amusement area.

Tarzan at Sandy Beach

Long before Larry Hagman, Johnny Weissmuller, the Olympic swimming champ and, later, iconic movie Tarzan, was a spokesman for BVDs.

In 1931, Weissmuller performed a swimming exhibition at Sandy Beach as part of a BVD national tour to show off the company's new swimsuit line that he helped design.
